As mentioned in the last session report, I was interested in some spirits/druidic items the party might find as loot in the now uncorrupted ruins. I often like to give out rewards that interact or augment specific mechanics/procedures the party might be lacking in while not bypassing or solving it outright. So, I found some inspiration and thought up some stuff. Here are a few items! Happy to take thoughts and feedback on ‘em.
Everbark Figurine
This item was a fun one to build out, and inspiration credit goes to my rootring neighbor d4caltrops (big fan!) from their Magical Toys & Trinkets post. It’s a fairly subtle boost but could make a huge difference for a party that can’t afford to take Fatigue. Plus, it gave me some thoughts on how to flesh Elix out as a character: her having been a part of a nomadic druid circle after the Sundering who aimed to heal the land and its peoples where they could before she eventually settled down in the Spirit’s Grove.
memories into wood until her body simply said 'I think we've gone far enough.'
- Once per Journey, during Camping, this little figurine can be activated to become a Growl made of Warp Root.
- This Growl functions as a Scout, and has an Edge on the associated Deftness Check.
Fellowmark Charms
Granting restricted use of Quirks (or Calling Abilities!) via Magic Items can be a fun and easy means of creating rewards in BREAK!!, as evidenced by Legacy Gems on the official blog. I like the angle that the item is actually a gift from the creature kingdoms to the Druids rather than being arcana in nature.
- Once per Day, the Charm may bestow the Wearer the Beast Tongue Quirk (Source, pg. 141) for an Hour.
- The Charm's token specifies which creature category it enables speech with (e.g., a feather for birds)
- Activating the Quirk's Disadvantage destroys the item and invokes a roll on the Severe Injury Table, as a
powerful promise was broken.
Bag o’ Feathers
Admittedly, this is homebrew I already made in the past and posted on Discord but it is relevant to the theme. Messing with Inventory Slots is a devious trick and this one really hurts (ask my one player). It hurts doubly so if it’s from a glib faerie offering “help” while you’re in a sinking mud pit.
will offer a Bag of Feathers as a "boon", claiming it enables one to fly.
and certainly the heaviest feathers in the world.
- It can only be removed from one's Inventory if they can pass it off to a willing Creature.
- It immediately takes up 3 Inventory Slots.
Feather Stones
Player of mine (Abra’s player) came up with this one, perhaps in response to how “fun” the Bag o’ Feathers has been for the party in their travels. I really like it as a contrast to how an interaction/conversation with a faerie can end.
with such grace and force. Those sharing a kindred mischievous spirit to the fey know the truth of it.
- A Bag of Feather Stones contains 10 Stones, which can be used as currency in a pinch.
- Each Stone is imbued with a fey's touch, and are extremely light.
- They function as Thrown Weapons with a Range of 2 Battlefield Areas.
- Once a Stone is thrown, the magic fades and it becomes a normally-weighted, mundane Stone.
Feather-Touched Pouch
Ok, so the whole feather motif is probably overdone at this point but I suck at names so I’m going with it. Regardless, I do like the utility of this item and implications it has for Inventory management. Something obscenely heavy? Find a way to put it in the pouch but you’d better hope you don’t need it in a pinch. There’s no rulebook based Bag of Holding (nor do I think it would work without restriction in BREAK!!) but I think this emulates it fine enough in the vibe.
I do think there is room for a Discworld-esque Luggage Companion in BREAK!!, but another time another place.
heavier belongings that she commissioned hundreds of these Elsewhere-shifting storage devices.
- The Pouch is able to store one Item at a given time, no matter its size or weight.
- Any Item placed within the Pouch weighs half its required Slot amount while inside the Pouch.
- Due to the...frustrating nature of handling the bag, however, it takes 3 Turns to remove the Item from it.
Grass Sword
Straight outta Adventure Time on this one and a fairly by-the-book weapon, just with the addition of the Edge on the Ambush and it being weightless. Despite the Jealous Curse, this one is pretty good! It even has an open Weapon Ability slot to add some extra juice to it.
despite their flimsy appearance. Good luck breaking up with it, though.
- It is Cursed with Jealousy (Source, pg. 295).
- However, it grants the Wielder an Edge on their Ambush Contest for Concealed Weapons' Sneaky Swipe ability.
- As it is made of grass and wraps around the Wielder's arm, it takes up no Inventory Slots.
